Summer Read Camp Provides Students with Support in Reading and Writing

Summer Reading Camp for grades K-6 provides students with additional support in reading and writing skills during the summer.

“The goal is for them not to regress over the summer. We want them to maintain their skills,” says 2nd-grade teacher Melissa Stevens.

For six weeks every Monday through Thursday Melissa Stevens and Chris Bonacquisti co-teach the summer reading program at the Jr./Sr. High School.

The summer camp is organized into four skill groups:
1. Reading to self with Chromebooks.
2. Handwriting work.
3. Teacher-led group for decoding and comprehension work.
4. Teacher-led group for word work.

In these groups, students focus on developing their handwriting skills, mastering letter formation, editing sentences, and practicing writing in complete sentences.

The primary focus of the program is reading and writing, but students get time to work on their math skills at the end of the day.

“We’ve seen a big increase in reading needs at school and that’s why we think this program is really important to keep them reading over the summer and keeping their skills fresh,” said Stevens.

Reading is the backbone of fundamental learning. By taking part in the reading summer program students are helping themselves to improve in other subjects such as math and science.

The summer reading program is still open to students who have been recommended by a teacher. The program runs for two and a half hours each morning with breakfast and to-go lunches available. Arrangements are made for students attending the Shatford Park Summer Camp to be picked up by counselors so they can attend both camps.
