New Lebanon High School Student Hailed a Hero While Lifeguarding at Queechy Lake

High school senior Liam Buckenroth, was honored by the Canaan Town Supervisor for his lifesaving role in an August 13th boating accident at Queechy Lake in Canaan, New York. Queechy Lake is part of the Adams Point Beach Association. Buckenroth and two other lifeguards sprung to action when a boat collided with a swimmer outside the boundaries of Adams Point Beach.

Liam was the first to jump in the water with his paddleboard to assist the critically injured woman by helping her to the beach so she could be stabilized. Once on land, he helped stabilize the women and directed the ambulance to the scene.

He says that it took some time to cope with the severity of the accident, but he now feels proud for the way he responded. He also said that he kept in contact with the family of the injured woman. In the weeks following the accident he received letters from the injured person’s family thanking him for jumping into action and helping at the scene.

This was Liam’s first year working as a lifeguard and when asked if he would be returning to Queechy Lake this summer he said absolutely. He plans to work this summer at Queechy Lake as the head lifeguard.

“We are very proud of Liam. He is a fine example of what we strive our students to be at New Lebanon CSD, students who give back back to the community, put others first, and strive to be their best.  Liam is a true hero and we are fortunate to have him as part of our school community. – Superintendent Kourt
