NL student wins regional spelling bee for second year in a row

Lydia LoverinOn February 24, seventh grade New Lebanon Junior High School student Lydia Loverin became the first repeat champion since 2003 to take top honors in the Capital Region Spelling Bee at Proctors in Schenectady.

Lydia correctly spelled words like “lamina,” “inconspicuous,” “dossier,” “amphibious” and the winning word “occludent.”

The competitors were students in grades four through eight and under age 16. Lydia will go on to compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., at the end of May.

The spelling bee was sponsored by Capital Region BOCES, The Times Union, Hannaford Supermarkets and the Upper Hudson Library System.
