WBH students stack for the World Record

On Thursday, November 13, Walter B. Howard Elementary students, along with thousands of participants from around the world, participated in what the Guinness World Records terms the “World’s Largest Sport Stacking Event.”

Sport stacking requires students to set up (up-stack) and dismantle (down-stack) specially-designed cups, into pyramids, as fast as they can for 30 minutes.

Students participated in the activity during their Physical Education class. The activities required both physical endurance, hand-eye coordination and the ability to work with others.

“At Walter B. Howard Elementary, we spend a lot of time teaching habits that promote leadership and cooperative behavior,” said Physical Education Teacher Frank Healy. “This activity required students to work with other students of different abilities to achieve what they couldn’t do alone.”

Pre-K students also participated in the event with the Grade 5 students. According to Healy, this provided an opportunity for the older students to demonstrate leadership as role models.

Last year’s record was 555,932 stackers. Students hope to break that record with 600,000 stackers participating during the course of the day.
