WBH Principal’s Update: October 2017

Dear Families,

I hope you and your family are having a great October.  I am writing to update you on some WBH happenings, events, and activities:

Over the last two months our students have been working very hard in reading.  As a school community each teacher has taught our students how to work in a reading workshop.  Reading workshop is when the teacher teaches a mini-lesson or reading concept, the children practice the concept with their teacher, and then the children again practice this concept as they read their independent books.  Each child is reading a “just right” independent book that they choose (with the guidance of their teacher.) You will notice that your child is reading more in school than they ever have before.  All studies say the only way for children to improve as a reader is for them to read as much as possible.  Please help by encouraging your child to read at home as much as possible.  Contact your child’s teacher for at home book ideas.  Happy reading!

A big thank you to our wonderful PTA for bringing Song Writers, Chuck and Mirra Costa to WBH. These musicians worked with each of our classrooms for a week to write inspirational songs about hope and being mindful.  At the beginning of October, our students shared their work at a school-wide assembly. We sure have some talented children at WBH. The published songs are posted on Facebook.

The month of October is fire prevention month. The Lebanon Valley Protective Association visited our school this week to remind our students about fire safety.  Your children will be coming home to check your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and will encourage you to make an emergency family escape plan.  A big thank you to our fire fighters and heroes at The Lebanon Valley Protective Association for all that they do and for visiting WBH.

It was great to see all of the children and their families at last month’s PTA family picnic and outdoor movie night.  This month we hope to see you at our PTA sponsored “Trunk or Treat” on October 31st at 5pm.

I want to thank you all for your continued support here at WBH.  Remember my door is always open. Do not hesitate to contact me at akourt@newlebanoncsd.org or by calling the school office at (518) 766-2220.

Fondly,

Andrew Kourt
WBH Principal
