BNL Modified Boys Soccer Lose Close Game to Cambridge 3-2

The Berlin-New Lebanon Boys Modified team dropped their first game of the season against Cambridge Tuesday. It was a close game throughout. BNL took a 1-0 first quarter advantage thanks to good footwork and shooting by Markell Popov. The advantage was short lived though, as Cambridge managed to weave through the defense with quality passing and ball control, quickly bringing the game to a 1 to 1 tie just before the end of the first. The remainder of the first half was a defensive battle between the two teams, with neither BNL or Cambridge able to get many shots on goal.

The second half saw much more offensive play. BNL was able to retake the lead on a second quality goal by Markell Popov, bringing BNL to a 2-1 advantage over Cambridge. Overall, the 2nd half saw much improved offensive play for BNL, with better passing, better ball control, and more shots on goal. Lukas Zuke demonstrated impressive individual technique, winning numerous one-on-ones and driving the ball into Cambridge’s zone. Cale Maxon also pushed the ball forward, making play-after-play, distributing the ball offensively, as well as making stops in a defensive capacity. Jack Healy bailed out multiple defensive backfield lapses with a number of great saves on tough shots.

Unfortunately, BNL was unable to keep Cambridge from scoring in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Cambridge’s combination of intricate passing combinations, communication, excellent individual ball control, and constant offensive pressure, was just enough to counter BNL’s defensive lines. Cambridge managed to tie the game at 2-2 in the 3rd and took the lead and the win late in the 4th quarter.

BNL falls to 1-1-1 on the season. They face Stillwater at home (Stephentown Field) at 4:30
