BNL Winter Sports Round Up 1/11-1/18

BNL Bowling vs Stillwater Coach Recap 1/11
The BNL bowlers competed Thursday afternoon, bowling Stillwater at Hometown Lanes. Out of the gates, the Mountain Lions rolled one of their lowest team scores to date. A quick huddle and pep talk resulted in the bowlers working together to pick each other up during game two – combining excellent shots to roll their new high team game of the season with an 837.Game three saw continued teamwork and improvement even though no match points were claimed.

Sophomore Kaylee Ferrarin led the charge with games of 159, 146, 158 for a 463. Noah Bonesteel had a high game of 163 and Myra Snyder had a high of 147. Special shoutout to 7th grader Devin Reichert of New Lebanon for rolling a new personal best in his varsity debut. Devin struggled more than he wanted to game one with an 85 but then rolled 155 in game two for a 70 pin improvement! He, as well as his teammates, prove that the bowling future is bright! To top it all off, Coach Marbot and Coach Murphy were incredibly proud of multiple compliments regarding shot making and positive team attitudes the Mountain Lions received from the opposing coach. The bowlers are truly growing and improving as a team and we are excited to see more gains in the second half of the season. Keep it rolling bowlers!

Section II Girls Wrestling Ranking Tournament on 1/14
The Super Powers Sisters. BNL Wrestlers Tallulah AND Vivienne Powers placed 2nd and 3rd at the Section II Girls Ranking Tournament on 1/14/24. The coaches are waiting to see how many slots Section II gets at States for each weight class; however, there is a good chance both have earned their way to States. The BNL coaches should know that by the middle of the week.
Vivienne was seeded 5th at 126 lbs. going into the day. She went 4-1 today on her way to 3rd place. She beat girls both more experienced and that she’d lost to earlier in the year. Very proud of her progress in her first year wrestling.
Tallulah came in seeded 1st. She won an easier first round match. Then won against a girl she’d dropped a match to earlier in the year. In the finals she lost to a tough Shenendehowa wrestler that had just dropped down from the 185 lb. weight class.
Also, a shoutout to Julia Stickles who won both her matches with pins in the JV event at the tournament too.
(Yes, I’ve been waiting all season to use that headline, lol.) -Coach Prather

BNL Varsity Girls Basketball Senior Night and Coach Recap 1/17
The BNL Girls Varsity Basketball team came up short for the win against Salem (48-16). Lillian Gardell led the team with another double-double, 10 points and 14 rebounds! Senior Rebecca Madsen had 2 points and 14 rebounds while senior Nikki Minkler had 2 points and 3 rebounds. We will hold our heads high as we enter practice to prepare for our game on Friday.

I have been given the opportunity to coach our two seniors, Rebecca Madsen and Nikki Minkler for the last two seasons, which has been nothing short of awesome. I was there to witness the start of their basketball career coaching them for Taconic Valley Youth Basketball. Watching the two of them grow over the years not only on the basketball court but into amazing young women has been an honor. I am grateful to have been a part of their athletic careers here in Berlin and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Rebecca and Nikki have been playing varsity basketball for the last three years and are two of our current captains. Both Nikki and Rebecca have been leaders both on and off the court. We will absolutely miss the energy and enthusiasm they bring to the team. – Coach Zinna & Coach Harris
