Speaker John Robinson Visits WBH Elementary

John Robinson speaks among elementary studentsWBH elementary students had the opportunity to listen to inspirational speaker, John Robinson, speak about being different and overcoming challenges in his own life.

Robinson is a quadruple amputee, born with no extension of his legs or arms. He is a motivational speaker and managing partner and CEO of Our Ability, a local agency that helps people with disabilities locate employment.

“Everyone is different and you can learn from each other. Be happy with who you are because we are all lucky to be who we are,” said Robinson.

Robinson spoke about the difficulties of growing up and feeling different.  Not much came easy – even basic daily activities such as getting dressed, eating and writing.

“How many of you have to learn something new at school? Do you know how to do it right away?” asked Robinson. “You will learn that it might seem like you can’t do something, but if you try and work hard, you can do it!”

At the age of 44, Robinson learned how to ride a bike. He showed students photos of the three-wheel hand cycle he learned to ride with the help of his children.

For the fourth year, Robinson and his family have biked 380 miles, the entire length of the Erie Canal from Buffalo to Albany. The ride, which takes nearly two weeks to complete, helps raise awareness for people with disabilities. Learn more about the Journey Along the Erie Canal.
