On June 9, WBH hosted its 2nd Annual Instrument Petting Zoo!
4th grade students had the opportunity to explore and try a variety of band instruments as they prepare to join 5th Grade Band next year.
Over the past several weeks in music class, students have been learning about each instrument offered in our band program. They had the chance to see instruments up close, learn how they work, hear them played live, hold them, and watch performances featuring each instrument. The Instrument Petting Zoo provided the exciting final step in that process: making their very first sounds!
With the help of our 6th grade band students, future musicians learned how to hold instruments, form embouchures, and experience the unique challenges and rewards of each instrument. From buzzing on brass mouthpieces to trying reeds for the first time, students gained hands-on experience that simply can’t be replicated through pictures or videos.
The Instrument Petting Zoo is designed to help students make informed decisions about which instrument they would like to play as they begin their band journey in 5th grade. We are incredibly grateful to our 6th grade mentors for sharing their knowledge, patience, and enthusiasm with our future musicians.
We can’t wait to welcome the next generation of WBH band members this fall!
