New Lebanon Jr/Sr High School teacher named News Channel 13 Top Teacher

New Lebanon Jr/Sr High School teacher Valene Synakowski was named a Top Teacher by WNYT News Channel 13. Watch the full story below.

In his nomination letter, Principal Matthew Klafehn wrote:

Prior to Valene’s arrival six years ago, our chorus had ten students. Valene has since transformed our choral music program to a dynamic and accomplished group of which our students and school community are very proud.  Presently, fifty students comprise our Senior Choir.  Forty seven percent of our school population now participates in our Junior and Senior Choirs, and singing is now a coveted part of our educational program.

So cool in fact, that many of our band students began inquiring as to their ability to participate in both music programs.  Val responded immediately to this request by forming independent study opportunities for students from Band, as well as for those who could not work Chorus into their academic schedule.  The rise in popularity has also led to the creation of a Jazz choir, geared toward the singing of more contemporary works.  As a result of student interest and the quality of our vocal performances, a musical component is now a feature of all school sponsored events, including sporting events, pep rallies, awards assemblies and our Memorial Day Assembly program.

Valene’s success is a result of her outstanding talent, her genuine love of music and, most importantly, her ability to forge effective relationships with her students.  While she strives to reach every student with whom she comes in contact, she has targeted many of our at risk youth who have lacked initiative in their schooling.  She has, in essence, used choral music as a mechanism to increase interest in school and overall academic attitude.   This has aided in the overall success of our students across the board, and our building is very grateful.
