NLCSD builds FUN into Reading & Literacy

Several recent activities have highlighted our commitment to building good reading habits and fun in literacy, especially at the elementary school level.

On Friday, May 15th, the High School Digital Literacy 2.0 class installed a Story Walk at WBH elementary school. The project was funded by a Berkshire Taconic grant to cover the cost of books, supplies and laminating. Students spent time researching picture books for the project, landing on Mako and Tiger: Two Not So Friendly Sharks, written by Scott Rothman and illustrated by Mika Song (who recently visited the elementary school). Students then spent time coming up with activities to accompany the story to create an interactive experience for children. They designed, printed, laminated, and mounted the each panel the playground. WBH students were excited to start the 17 panel experience.

Earlier in May, Michelle Bruns organized a field trip for some WBH students to the New Lebanon Town Library. Students listened and interacted with a story, did a craft together, received library cards and checked out books to jump start their Summer reading. Special thanks to Michelle Hoffman (the Town Librarian), Stewart’s Shops “Holiday Match” program (for supplies), and some great volunteers.
