Health Precautions for Winter

12/8/22

Dear Families,

We hope you are enjoying the holiday season so far. We would like to bring to your attention the recent increase in respiratory illnesses throughout New York State including influenza, RSV, and COVID-19. While these illnesses might be manageable for some, they can also cause serious outcomes for others.

The district’s top priority continues to be the safety of our students, faculty, and staff. Our hope is to continue to work together to keep our schools and students healthy by following the suggestions sent to us by the New York State Department of Health.

NY Department of Health Suggestions:

1.Wash your hands often with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds.

2.Not coughing or sneezing into your hands; sneeze or cough into your elbow.

3.Staying home when sick or symptomatic.

The health department wants to remind families that wearing a mask is always an option, especially during times when illness is prevalent.  Mask wearing is a personal decision for all students and their families (Masks are only mandated when coming back from having COVID.)  The health department also wants to remind families to stay updated on Influenza and COVID vaccinations.  Reach out to your health care provider for any questions in regards to vaccination options.

Please refer to the following guidelines from the New York State Center for School Health on reasons for sending/keeping children home:

– Fever greater than 100.4°  (taken by mouth)

– Vomiting and/or diarrhea within the last 24 hours

– Severe sore throat along with fever and feeling ill for more than 48 hours, or after exposure to Strep throat infection

– Honey-crusted sores around the nose or mouth or rash on other body parts

– Large amounts of mucous (liquid) from their nose, with face pain or headache

– Severe ear pain or fluid coming from the ear

– Severe headache, especially with  fever

– Keep children home for 24 hours after the fever ends or they have completed 24 hours of medication if prescribed by your healthcare provider.
