BNL 2024 Booster Club Awards
The BNL 2024 Outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year
Submitted by Shannon Gardell, Co-President of the BNL Booster Club
The BNL Outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year encompasses the athlete, as a whole, including the demonstration of: Community Service, Academic Success, Athletic Accomplishments, Leadership, Workmanship, School/Athletic Spirit, and Overall positive difference/impact in our communities. This year we had 62 nominations!! BNL Athletic Director Mr. Corey Brown had the tremendously difficult task of reviewing the nominations and choosing the BNL Outstanding Athlete of the Year. With so many exceptional seniors, Mr. Brown could not decide, and therefore Co-Athletes of the Year have been selected for 2024!
Aidan Van Dyk, Berlin CSD is one of BNL’s Co-Athlete of the Year. Aidan received multiple nominations, all of which highlighted his excellent sportsmanship, commitment to every sport he plays, his volunteerism and giving back to the community, and his leadership skills. In a stellar nomination, one of his coaches noted that he is “a model student-athlete for multiple BNL Sports, leads by example by showing dedication, discipline, and a strong work ethic in training and performance.” They continued by saying Aidan is, “determined and always willing to work harder to get better, incredibly coachable and its his positive attitude that sparks the team, as I am sure it does in the classroom.” Aidan was recently recognized as a First Team All-Star for the Independent schools competing in Section II Varsity Baseball!
Tallulah Powers, New Lebanon CSD is also one of BNL’s Co-Athlete of the Year. Tallulah received multiple nominations that pointed out what an amazing individual she is. Not only is she a three-sport athlete who has received multiple honors, she also maintains a high academic average, is gifted musically, and volunteers throughout her community. In a wonderful nomination, one of her coaches reminded us of those athletic honors: “she was a 2023 State Runner-Up in her wrestling weight class and a State top 8 finisher in both 2023 and 2024 and a Wasaren & Section II Class D place finisher for Shot Put & Discus.” She also served as captain for both of those teams, demonstrating what an amazing leader she is.
Berlin-New Lebanon Athletics Booster Club Scholarship
Submitted by Shannon Gardell, Co-President of the BNL Booster Club
The Berlin-New Lebanon Athletics Booster Club Scholarship is awarded to four Seniors with plans to attend college or a vocational school. In order to apply, the candidates must have participated in two or more sports over at least years, have an average of at least 80%, and show good character and citizenship in the BNL athletics program and community. The applicants were asked to write an essay answering the question, “What lesson(s) have you learned from participating in sports that will be helpful for you in life after High School?” This year’s applications were reviewed by a committee comprised of 10 Booster Club volunteers not related to any of the applicants. This year we had nine applicants, and we are pleased to present a total of four awards totaling $1000! Two scholarship awards will be presented to student-athletes from Berlin and two will be going to student-athletes from New Lebanon. All of this year’s candidates made it extremely difficult for our scholarship committee since ALL of them were super qualified.
