School Tax Relief (STAR) Program

The School Tax Relief (STAR) program provides property tax relief to eligible New York State homeowners. If you’re enrolled in the STAR program, you can receive your benefit in one of two ways:

  • STAR Credit Check: If you’re registered for the STAR credit, the Tax Department will mail you a STAR check each year. This check can be used to pay your school taxes. To be eligible, your home must be your primary residence, and the combined income of the owners and their spouses must be $500,000 or less.
  • STAR Exemption: If you have been receiving the STAR exemption since 2015, you can continue to receive it for the same primary residence. This benefit provides a reduction on your school tax bill, as long as you remain eligible. Please note that the STAR exemption is no longer available to new homeowners.

If you’re not yet enrolled in the STAR program, you can register online at the New York State Tax Department website or by calling 518-457-2036.
