Letter to Jr/Sr High School Families 10/8/19

Dear Families:

Student safety is a priority for all of us, educators and parents alike.

As I reflect upon the concerns that were raised at school as a result of a social media posting that occurred over the weekend, I wanted to reach out to all of you in an effort to enhance our overall response to such events.

One of the things that I have found in recent years is that there is an assumption that the school is always aware of that which transpires online in conversations among our students. While there are certainly issues that present themselves that I am privy to, there are unfortunately times when I am among the last to know. I cannot express how important it is that if an event that has the potential of creating an unsafe situation occurs on social media or otherwise, 911 needs be called.  This is especially prudent after school hours.

I am incredibly grateful for our students and families who have felt empowered to report potentially dangerous situations in this ever changing world to both school personnel and law enforcement. We as a school will be working with our kids to help them be mindful of their surroundings wherever they may go and to lead them to understand that they may (and should) dial 911 in the event that the physical safety of either themselves or others falls into question.

I thank you in advance for all of your support. Please feel free to contact me should you wish to speak to me more about this initiative.

Sincerely,

Matthew Klafehn, Principal
